OCA Utah Holds Awards Event

filipina dating free OCA Asian Pacific Islander American Advocates Utah held their 21st yearly Utah Asian Pacific Islander Community Awards Night on November 9, 2019, in West Valley City, Utah. Under the bearing of OCA Utah Current President Emilio Manuel Camu, who is the Director of the Pilipino American Association of Utah, the evening was appreciated by all who joined in. Decisions were held to choose the 2020 Board for OCA Utah. 

A Filipino smorgasbord was catered by BFF Turon. what's more, the Dosa Live Station was cooked by Saffron Valley, two neighborhood eateries nearby. The wager included numerous prizes gave by the OCA Utah Board and neighborhood organizations. 

Floyd Mori, a Past National President and previous National Executive Director/CEO of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) and previous President/CEO of the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) in Washington, D.C., was respected with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Mori showed Economics at Chabot College in Hayward, California, for a very long time and was a Mayor of the City of Pleasanton, California. He filled in as a Member of the California State Assembly for a very long time. He has for quite some time been a promoter for Asian American and Pacific Islander associations and issues. Mori was presented by Verona Mauga, a previous leader of OCA Utah. OCA National gave Mori an Outstanding Citizen Award in 2012. 

Getting the Pillar of the Community Award was Jacob Fitisemanu, Jr., Council Member for West Valley City. Fitisemanu was brought into the world in New Zealand however was brought up in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Taylorsville, Utah. He has lived in West Valley City for a very long time. He was designated to the US Census National Advisory Council in 2014 and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum. He was named in 2015 to the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders where he served until 2017. He manages the Utah Department of Health Clinics of Utah program. 

Other awardees for 2019 were: The Ohana Association of Weber State University (Youth Moving Mountains Award), Ratsamy Bing Vilaiphanh (Spirit of the Community Award), Feagaiga O Ali'I (Living Treasures Award), and Nepalese Association of Utah (Organization of the Year Award). 

A few individuals from the Japanese American people group of Salt Lake City who have been regarded in the past by OCA Utah are: Judge Raymond Uno, Wat Misaka, Irene Maya Ota, and Edith Mitko. 

Judge Uno was in participation at the occasion as were Utah State Senator Jani Iwamoto and Dr. Karen Kwan, Utah State Representative, who was an author of the OCA Utah Chapter and is Advisor to the Board. 

The Salt Lake JACL Chapter and the Mount Olympus JACL Chapter upheld the occasion by buying tables for the Awards Night. 

Floyd Mori has distributed a book of addresses and articles about the Japanese American and Asian American story. It incorporates realities about the abuse of Japanese Americans during World War II. This was a period when the Constitution didn't secure blameless residents and workers who confronted extreme bias and prejudice.
